To earn ARRT® certification and registration in a postprimary discipline, you must apply through the postprimary eligibility pathway. This pathway is designed for technologists who already hold and maintain certification and registration in an approved supporting discipline and wish to add an additional credential.
To qualify, you’ll need to complete all postprimary eligibility requirements, including structured education, clinical experience, ethics, and other requirements within 24 months before submitting your application.
This pathway may also be used by professionals who hold a credential from ARDMS® or NMTCB®, provided all other eligibility criteria are met.
What Is Structured Education — and Why It Matters
Structured education is a requirement for professionals pursuing post-primary certification and registration with the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT®). Candidates must complete 16 hours of structured education within the 24 months before applying for post-primary certification.
This requirement ensures you master discipline-specific knowledge tied to the exam content.
Structured education must:
Align with the content outline for your credential’s discipline.
Include at least one hour in each major content category (e.g. Patient Care, Safety, Image Production, Procedures).
Be approved by a CE Approver or state entity, or be an academic course under an ARRT®-recognized institution.

Understanding the Structured Education Process
Choose Activities
Pick Category A or A+ CE courses or academic offerings approved for ARRT®.
Ensure they align with your discipline’s content outline and cover all content categories.
Complete Within 24 Months
All 16 structured education hours must be completed in the 24 months prior to your postprimary application.
CE logged outside that window will expire and not count.
Once your application is assigned and your exam window opens, your clinical experience records and structured education are locked in and no longer expire.
Log Activities & Request Approval
Use ARRT®’s postprimary tool to submit your structured education courses.

Why Finding Exact Structured Education Credit Match Is Hard
CE activities are approved first by ARRT®-recognized CE Approvers.
Next, They are coded for Structured Education.
This means a 16 CE course may only provide 6–12 structured education credits.
A perfect 1:1 match (16 CE = 16 structured education credits) is extremely rare.
Result: Many technologists buy subscriptions or courses that don’t align with their structured education need, forcing them to purchase extra courses from multiple providers.
